Is it a competition of identity-seeking ?

While reading articles in the top journal, I can feel the efforts that researchers are putting into differentiating themselves from each other. E.g the choice of vocabularies in problematisation, the choice of theoretical framework, the choice of methodology, and etc., Is this a competition of being innovative or we are trying to seek out for and announcing our identity?

While we are trying so much to de-competition or de-capitalism (as a inside joke), we still end up being in turning the journey of identity-seeking as a competition?!
